Up From the Skies, from Audio Dropouts, Vol. 1

"Up from the Skies" is originally from Jimi Hendrix's 1968 album "Axis: Bold as Love." Jimi is a hard artist to tackle, as he has a singular style that is difficult to approach!  However, we approached it and said, “heeeey, how's it going?”  Our thoughts on over cover version are below:

Steve: Pete suggested this one, and I think we accomplished a nice little bit of psychedelia here! The track is pretty stripped-down by our standards, and particularly like the envelope filter sound that Rich uses, and the relaxed Jimi-esque vocal that Pete pulls off. I had purchased a fretless bass shortly before the recording of this tune, so this is one of my early explorations of that instrument.

Rich: An out-of-left-field Hendrix song becomes a curveball ZFB song. I rarely get to play the wah-wah pedal but I got to dust it off and fire it up for this one! Pete's vocals would make Jimi yell "Fire!" and Steve's bass playing puts me in a "Purple Haze" in the best way possible.

Pete: James Marshall Hendrix is one of my great idols, and I've always thought his vocal construction very underrated. On the drive over to the studio, I surprised myself by remembering this whole song, having not heard it for years. Obviously, Jimi can be very formidable for guitarists, but Steve and Rich were on board and did a masterful stripped-down version of this deep cut. The fretless bass was a nice addition, and gives the song a free-wheeling relaxed sort of vibe.
